Chief Purpose of this position:
The Department of Internal Medicine is seeking an Obesity Medicine Physician board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine to join an 11-year-old academic obesity medicine practice. You will be part of a thriving and growing comprehensive medical obesity program which includes behavioral health, dietitians, pharmacists, a partnership with bariatric surgery and liver/metabolic health and a fellowship program. You will join a busy clinical practice and have opportunities for teaching at all levels, research, and leadership. The candidate will have clinical experience in obesity medicine and be an innovator and passionate about the care of patients with obesity.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching: Supervise and teach housestaff who rotate through the obesity medicine clinic. Supervise the 4th year one-month medical student obesity medicine elective. Supervise and teach in the obesity medicine fellowship program. Participate in other learning activities such as morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners.
Research: Participate in clinical and educational research, according to skills, interest, and funding (research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations).
Service: Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of VCU Health System, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal health. Work towards the continued growth of a comprehensive program for the treatment of obesity.
Clinical: Provide direct clinical care to patients with obesity in person at one of three locations. Provider virtual care to patients with obesity. Participate in night and weekend on-call duties (telephone call only; no in-hospital responsibilities), shared among Division of Internal Medicine faculty. Comply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work, including credentialing, documentation, and billing. Work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team.
Required Qualifications:
- Board certification in Internal Medicine
- Board certification in Obesity Medicine
- Direct experience managing complex outpatients
- Interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting
- Interest in furthering the academic mission of the Division
- Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective communication, both verbal and written
Preferred Qualifications:
- Obesity Medicine fellowship trained
